International Travel Scheme (ITS)

International Travel Support (ITS) Scheme provides financial assistance to Indian researchers for presenting a research paper in an international scientific event (conference, seminar, workshop etc.) held abroad. In addition, support is also provided to young scientists (age limit below 35 years as on date of start of the event) for attending training programmes, Short-term schools and Workshops. The maximum duration for training programs, schools, and workshops is limited to 21 days. Economy class air-fare by shortest route, airport-tax and visa fees are provided under the scheme. Registration fee as per actual or Rs. 50,000/- whichever is less will be provided to young scientist (Age< 35 on the date of start of event) in addition to the above support. Applications can be submitted within the window of 60-90 days in advance from the date of start of the event. The system will not accept early or late submission of applications. However, applicant who has already submitted a proposal will not be eligible to apply again within next 90 days from the date of submission of the first application.

The ITS scheme is to provide financial assistance for presenting a original research paper or chairing a session or delivering a keynote address in an international scientific event held abroad (conference/seminar/symposium etc.). This scheme also provides support to young researchers (Age'<'35 years on the date of start of event) for attending workshop, short term training programmes and schools being organized outside India.

  • Applicant should be an active Indian researcher engaged in R&D work in recognized academic institutions or research laboratories in India.
  • The applicant should have an invitation for presenting an original scientific paper. Similar invitation is required in the case of young scientists attending training programmes such as short term courses, summer/winter schools, workshop etc.
  • The applicant should not have availed financial assistance under this Scheme during the last three years.
  • The scientific event should be of an international character. Invitation of personal nature such as for carrying out post-doctoral work, informal training programmes/courses, internship, observer-ship etc. will not be eligible for support.
  • Applicant must have obtained Master's degree in Science or Bachelor's degree in professional courses from a recognized University by the time of submission of application.

This scheme provides to & fro economic class air fare by the shortest route, airport tax and visa fees for attending the specific event. Registration fee as per actual or Rs. 50,000/- whichever is less will be provided to young scientist (Age< 35 on the date of start of event) in addition to the above support. The support is provided on reimbursement basis as per actual expenditure incurred by the applicant within the guidelines of the scheme. However, Taxi fare will not be reimbursed.

  • An endorsement letter duly signed and stamped by competent authority of the institute.
  • A copy of letter of acceptance of the presenting paper (oral/poster) by the organizers.
  • A copy of the abstract of the paper to be presented. Please be sure to include name of all the authors, authors' affiliated institutions with full address and title of the abstract.
  • Biodata with complete list of Scientific / Technical publications and Patents, if any.

Terms & Conditions of ITS grant:
  • Travel grant should be used only for the purpose of attending the scientific event for which the ANRF (formerly SERB) accorded its approval for financial support.
  • The Institute/Applicant should submit the claim bills, and other necessary documents both online and offline within 90 days of the last day of the event.
  • The host institute/Applicant shall ensure that the fund released is used exclusively and appropriately for which it has been sanctioned.
  • If the applicant to whom the travel grant has been awarded leaves the institution, the Institute and the applicant should inform ANRF (formerly SERB) immediately, and the grant released, if any, should be refunded back by the Institute to ANRF (formerly SERB) immediately by means of DD drawn in favour of "Fund for Science and Engineering Research".
  • If the results of research are to be legally protected, the results should not be presented in international fora without action being taken to secure legal protection for the research results.
  • If any candidate is found to have furnished incorrect / misleading information at any stage, his/her candidature will be cancelled and no reimbursement will be made. The candidate will also be debarred for the next three years for availing support under this scheme.

For successful online submission of the application the following points may be noted:

  • Applicant(s) should first register into the online website click here to register.
  • After log-in, kindly go to Menu → Proposal Submission → Form Submission → Select scheme and start filling the form online.
  • The researchers are required to apply online through the portal between 60–90 days in advance prior to the start date of the event. The system will not accept early or late submission of applications.
  • Application submitted through any other mode will not be considered.

Q1: I was awarded ITS Support to attend an International Conference in Washington. But, I could not attend the conference due to a delay in getting Visa. Can I use the above travel support to attend another conference to be held in July 2023?

A1: No. The support given for the specific event cannot be used to attend another. The Applicant should apply fresh to seek support for another event.

Q2: Do I need to A) book my air tickets with Air India only or any other specific airline and B) Who will provide the certificate for "Lowest Available Fare"?

A2: A) You can book with any airline, but only through these authorized agents: Balmer Lawrie, Ashoka Travels & Tours, or IRCTC.
B) For Balmer Lawrie or Ashoka Travels, request the "Lowest Available Fare" certificate. For IRCTC, submit a screenshot of the fare page.

Q3: My event is from 10–19 September 2023 in Italy. I plan to travel early on 07 September. Should I mention my travel dates in the event details?

A3: No, mention only the actual event dates in the application. Enter travel details separately in the visit schedule section.

Q4: What precautions should I take while booking the tickets?

A4: Book tickets only after your visa is issued. Ensure the visa is valid for your travel date. Carry all valid documents during travel.

Q5: I have availed support under this scheme earlier and 3 years haven’t passed. Can I apply again?

A5: No. You must complete 3 years from the start date of the previous event before applying for new support.

Q6: What are the criteria for awarding travel support?

A6: Selection is based on academic track record (SCI publications in last 5 years), importance of the conference, and diversity in applicants. Priority is travel support only, not solely visa or registration fees.

Q7: I got invited for 2-month lab training abroad. Can I get support?

A7: No. Support is not given for informal training, post-doc work, or internships.

Q8: Can I use the grant for extended research after the conference abroad?

A8: No. You must return after the event. Extended stays are not permitted.

Q9: Can I attend a training program in another city before my conference?

A9: No. ANRF will reimburse airfare only to the conference city by shortest economy route.

Q10: Will ANRF support registration for both the conference and short-term school at the same venue?

A10: No. Only the event approved by ANRF will be supported.

Q10a: If I travel within a foreign country before returning to India, will my airfare be reimbursed?

A10a: No. Only direct round-trip airfare to/from India and the event city is reimbursed.

Q11: Will ANRF reimburse charges for rescheduling tickets?

A11: No. Charges for rescheduling, cancellations, or extra baggage are not reimbursed.

Q12: What happens if I provide false information?

A12: Application will be canceled, support withdrawn, and you’ll be debarred for 3 years. Legal action may also be taken.

Q13: Can I submit my application and claim offline?

A13: No. Both application and claims must be submitted online. Hard copies of bills must be sent via speed post.

Q14: Can I submit my claim anytime?

A14: No. Submit claim within 90 days of the event end date. Delayed claims won’t be reimbursed.

Q15: I didn’t attend the event. Can I still get visa fee reimbursement?

A15: No. Visa fees are reimbursed only if the event is attended.

Q16: Are taxi fare, agent fee, and extra baggage charges covered?

A16: No taxi or baggage reimbursement. Only government-approved agent fees (including VFS) are supported.

Q17: Will ANRF reimburse for priority visa or premium services?

A17: No. Only regular visa charges are reimbursed.

Q18: Will young researchers get full registration fees including tours, dinners, etc.?

A18: No. Only the primary registration fee (max ₹50,000) is reimbursed. Extras like gala dinners and tours are excluded.

Q19: Is domestic (within India) travel support provided?

A19: No. The scheme supports only international events.

Q20: My event was postponed. Can I use the same grant for new dates?

A20: No. Grant is valid only for the originally approved dates.
